Organized Labour says Tinubu Failed to Give Us Democracy Day Gift Through New Minimum Wage



The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reacted to the Democracy Day Speech by the President, Bola Tinubu, where he gave assurance of a new minimum wage for the workforce, saying he failed to give them the much expected gift on June 12.

Ag. President of NLC, Comrade Prince Adewale Adeyanju who reacted on behalf of the union said the President may have accurately recounted parts of the democratic journey's history, but that it is evident that he has been misinformed regarding the outcome of the wage negotiation process.
He said they expected the President to harmonize the two figures submitted to him by the Tripartite Committee in favour of workers and masses, stating that it would have been a fitting Democracy Day gift.

The  President in democracy day speech said as his administration continue to reform the economy, he always listen to the people and will never turn his back on them.

Adeyanju said the organised Labour appreciate the President’s commitment to those fine democratic ideals which allowed the work of the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee to proceed unhindered despite some hiccups.
He said Labour had expected Mr. President to have used this understanding as one of those who was in the vanguard of the struggle with them around the nation to rescue Nigeria from the hands of the military to harmonize the two figures submitted to him by the Tripartite Committee in favour of workers and masses.

According to the Acting NLC President, the NLC would have expected that the advisers of the President would have told him that labour neither reached any agreement with the federal government and the employers on the base figure for a National Minimum Wage nor on its other components.
He their demand still remains N250,000 (two hundred and fifty thousand Naira) only and they have not been given any compelling reasons to change that position which they consider a great concession by Nigerian workers during the tripartite negotiation process.

He expressed surprised at the submission of Mr. President over a supposed agreement, believing that he may have been misled into believing that there was an agreement with the NLC and TUC.
He said there was none and it is important that they let the President, Nigerians and other national stakeholders understand this immediately to avoid a mix up in the ongoing conversation around the national minimum wage.
He said they have not even seen a copy of the document submitted to him and will not accept any doctored document.

Man kills house wife while separating a fight in Edo

A housewife, Mrs Nata Igbinovia, has reportedly been hacked to death by a father and his son, while separating a fight in Edo State. The Guardian learnt that the incident happened on Saturday night at Okpagha, an outskirt of Benin city, along Auchi Road. The teenage daughter of the deceased, identified as Patience, yesterday related how her mother met her gruesome death at the hands of Mr Ayo Philip and his yet-to-be-identified son (now at large). Patience explained that her mother was separating a fight between her nephew and their neighbours (the suspects) after a heated argument when they hacked her to death with a knife and an axe. She alleged that during the argument, Mr Philip brought out a knife to stab their nephew but was blocked by her mother who got injured in the process. A young Nigerian man named Bello Zubairu has been arrested for allegedly murdering his best friend.
